Attractions
Citrus County is the only place in the United States where individuals can swim and interact with the endangered West Indian manatees, whose winter home is the spring-fed rivers in the county.  Up to 400 playful manatees can be found at once.  Annually, the county holds the Florida Manatee Festival, which includes a fine arts show full of watercolors, photography, sculptures and handmade jewelry, live entertainment, food, and manatee tours and education.  Only 60 miles northwest of Orlando and 70 miles north of Tampa, Citrus County is in a prime location for day trips to nearby theme parks including  Walt Disney World, Sea World, Universal Studios and the John F. Recreation
The Citrus County Historical Society Inc. is the county''s museum of history, whose goal is to emphasize the importance of social studies.  All sorts of city records can be found here alongside changing exhibits and special events.  With the many parks and public areas around, Citrus County also offers diving, snorkeling, bird watching, fishing, canoing, cycling and much more for outdoor recreational opportunities.

Education
Next to the Gulf''s sparkling waters is the Citrus Campus of Central Florida Community College, offering a large variety of academic programs and student services.  Citrus County Schools serves the county with 23 public schools.  The district also provides a quality Exceptional Student Education Program, under which falls the Gifted Program for students whose abilities and potentials are so great that different educational material is required.  This program displays the county''s dedication to providing individualized learning experiences.
